Scion- February 2022

Volume 32, Issue #2 – February 2022

Liana Benavides ,
BCMG President

“The February sunshine steeps your boughs and tints the buds and swells the leaves within.”
     -William Cullen Bryant

Welcome to February! While many of us are getting anxious for spring, we know we are not yet quite out of the woods for winter weather events. Now is a great time to take care of some maintenance tasks in the garden. Prepping the beds, amending the soil, and caring for tools are just a few of the tasks we can take care of this month. We have a February monthly checklist in English & Spanish on our website for more ideas. For even more great information, check out the “Spring Clean-up & To-Do’s” presentations by David Rodriguez on 2/19 at Milberger’s Nursery & on 2/26 at The Garden Center. Both events are FREE and no registration is required.

We are excited to begin our Earth-Kind class series at the end of the month. These classes will be on Wednesday evenings starting on 2/23 at 6pm. You can sign up for the whole series of 6 ($75) or just select the ones you are interested in ($20/each). Click here for more information including how to register.

Love is in the air and what flower often goes along with it? If you guessed roses, you may be interested in our presentation on roses at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. This presentation is FREE, but registration is required. Register here.

We are sad not to be participating in the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo this year. We normally sell the famous Rodeo Tomatoes from our many gardening displays while answering all of your questions about your home gardening endeavors. This year’s Rodeo Tomato is the STM2255 and will be available for sale soon at local nurseries around town. Proceeds benefit the Junior Master Gardener program, which is a part of Texas A&M’s AgriLife Extension Service and supports teachers and children with training and materials to start youth garden programs.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for Old Man Winter, making his final appearances out in our gardens. This South Texas weather can be tricky. Follow us on Facebook for the latest updates and advice for cold snaps this month. Stay warm, safe, and keep on gardening!
